Pre-Existing Condition Prevents Murder Victim's Wife From Collecting Life Insurance

Stepanie McCraw is suing Settlers Life Insurance over a denied claim on her deceased husband’s life insurance policy. Settlers Life Insurance denied the claim on the grounds that Mrs. McCraw’s husband suffered from a pre-existing condition, which was not covered under the policy.

What is unique about this case, however, is that the pre-existing condition was not a factor in Mr. McCraw’s death. Mr. McCraw, who was previously diagnosed with Hepatitis C, died after being shot in the back.

According to a statement to ABC News by Mrs. McCraw’s attorney, “Mrs. McCraw lost her husband and wants the life insurance company to pay what is owed her. The policy is not specific as to whether there is a difference as to how you die. It does not even say you won’t get paid if you have a pre-existing condition.”
